Job Description
Thompson Thrift is seeking a Associate General Counsel (Commercial) to work out of the corporate office in Indianapolis, IN. The Associate General Counsel (Commercial) reports to the SVP - General Counsel and will provide direct legal support to the Commercial Development team for projects both under contract and development. This position will also provide additional support to Commercial's Property Management team on an as needed basis. The Associate General Counsel position will negotiate, draft, review, research, process and document a wide variety of agreements for Commercial, including, without limitation, retail tenant leases, declarations, covenants and restrictions, easements, development agreements, utility agreements, consulting agreements, license agreements, confidentiality agreements, property management agreements and other real estate development documents supporting Commercial Development projects.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Negotiate and draft a full range of retail leases real estate development agreements.
- Offer counsel on a variety of legal issues and business strategy impacting development.
- Advise executives within the company and work alongside Commercial Development Team Members.
- Manage various projects and deadlines.
- Advise executives on contract status, legal risks and business terms of various deals.
- Explain legal language.
- Draft terms and conditions in agreements.
- Ensure legal objectives are met.
- Research unique legal issues impacting the organization by identifying applicable statutes, judicial decisions, and codes.
- Keep abreast of legislative changes that may affect the company and its affiliates.
- Develop solutions to complex legal questions.
- Provide training to company and its affiliates on substantive legal topics.
- Other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of real estate law experience in a law firm or in-house legal department.
- Juris Doctor degree is required.
- Has extensive experience with the concepts and principles of one or more related fields or departments.
- Contributes to strategic planning, direction, and goal setting for the department or function in collaboration with senior management.
- Establishes departmental policies, practices, and procedures that have a significant impact on the organization.

Performing this job will sometimes require the employee to walk work sites that do not have infrastructure, this includes walking on uneven surfaces, through mud, through ruts, etc. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
