HR Benefits Specialist

Job Description

Thompson Thrift is seeking a Full-Time HR Benefits Specialist to work out of the corporate office in Indianapolis, IN. This role has four primary responsibilities:

  • Act as a subject matter expert on Thompson Thrift benefit plans and programs
  • Market and communicate Thompson Thrift benefit plans and programs to team members
  • Educate team members on benefits, healthy lifestyle and how to be smart consumers of healthcare
  • Plan compliance, research, and analysis to ensure our plans/programs are legal, competitive, meet employee needs, and support organizational goals.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Subject Matter Expert (20%)
    • Have a thorough and complete understanding of all our benefit plans/programs (who is eligible, coverages, vendors, contacts, etc.)
    • Maintain plan documentation
    • Educate HR Business Specialist
    • Consult and help troubleshoot elevated/complex issues or questions
  • Market and communicate benefit plans and programs (40%)
    • Drive benefit plan engagement and usage with team members
    • Ensure current and potential team members understand the value of the benefit plans/programs
    • Work with marketing to develop and execute an annual benefits marketing plan that has multiple touchpoints throughout the year
    • Identify vendor/partner resources that can be used to help market benefits to team members
    • Develop unique and creative ways to market benefit plans/programs
  • Education (20%)
    • Create programs designed to ensure team members understand how to access and use benefit plan/programs
    • Create, market, and conduct education programs to encourage and help team members live a healthy lifestyle
    • Create, market, and conduct education programs to encourage and help team members to be smart consumers of healthcare
  • Plan compliance, research, and analysis (20%)
    • Ensure plan documentation is maintained and complies with all legal requirements
    • Ensure all plan filings are accurate and made in a timely manner (i.e., 5500s)
    • Work with the Director of Compensation and Benefits to benchmark and review the benefit plans/programs – this includes but is not limited to:
      • Conducts research and analysis of industry trends, employee surveys and workplace best practices to design benefits packages that are competitive, meet employee needs, and support organizational goals
      • Research and evaluate third-party benefits vendors
      • Participate in selection and implementation of providers.
      • Ensures offerings comply with all applicable laws and regulations.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, human resources, or related field. Equivalent level of education and experience will be considered.
  • 4 years of progressive experience in human resources. Prefer background working with benefit plans and administration.
  • Outgoing personality with a positive, can-do attitude.
  • Internal marketing and communication background.
  • Strong communications and presentation skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Excel as well as other Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to analyze and present data in an effective and easy to understand manner.
  • Understanding of regulatory standards and reporting required for benefit plans/programs.
  • Understanding of HIPPA.
  • Familiarity with databases, payroll systems, and HRIS systems.
  • Focus on process and creating efficiency.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Performing this job will sometimes require the employee to walk work sites that do not have infrastructure, this includes walking on uneven surfaces, through mud, through ruts, etc. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

While performing duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office or remote setting. The noise in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate in an office setting. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work at construction work sites where the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and the risk of electrical shock. The noise in the construction work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee is required to work in compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
