Job Description

Thompson Thrift is seeking to hire a Full-Time Director of Compensation & Benefits to work out of the corporate office in Indianapolis, IN. The Director of Compensation & Benefits directs the Thompson Thrift compensation and benefits strategy, objectives and policies. This position develops, creates, and drives all compensation and benefits programs strategy designed to attract and retain team members. This position will work with executive management, team members, and outside vendors to monitor emerging trends and provide recommendations to update our strategy and tactics.  Additionally, the position creates policies and initiates to ensure compensation and benefits programs are competitive and follow all legal and organizational rules and guidelines.    

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Directs, and manages, the benefit strategy to align with Thompson Thrift’s culture, goals, mission, and values while creating an efficient and competitive program.
  • Creation and categorization of all job descriptions to align with our compensation program.
  • Monitors the compensation program to ensure if is effective and competitive.
  • Works with Human Resource Benefit Manager on benefits strategy.
  • Reviews benefits education, communication, and educational tools for team members across multiple locations.
  • Assists Human Resource Benefit Manager on the “Family Impact” program.
  • Initiates regular reviews of current programs and leads on investigating new benefits.
  • Collaborates with Director of Communications to ensure communications align with the Family Impact/Benefit and Engagement Strategy.
  • Recommend process improvement for benefits and Family Impact engagement.
  • Assist Human Resource Benefits Manager with new benefit offerings or modifications to the Family Impact program to increase team member engagement.
  • Review of Family Impact information into Business Unit meetings on a monthly and quarterly basis
  • Review of open enrollment presentation information.
  • Creation of the compensation timeline including annual compensation budgeting process, bonus programs, and merit cycles and ensures these work within the evaluation process.
  • Seek opportunities to enhance compensation operations through automation of work processes.
  • Monitor effectiveness of current compensation programs.  This includes evaluating cost, market conditions, employee satisfaction, and efficiency of administration.
  • Provide quarterly analysis of KPI’s for both benefits and compensation for the HR leadership team.
  • Upholds the security and confidentiality of documents and data within the area of responsibility.


  • 4-year degree is required. 
  • 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • SHRM certification is preferred.  
  • Analysis and presentation of data for benefits strategy.
  • Collaborative team-building skills.
  • Strong knowledge in Excel as well as other Microsoft office programs.
  • Excellent industry and historical knowledge of the compensation and benefits field.
  • Excellent communication skills including written and verbal. Clarity and accuracy are key.
  • Understanding of HIPPA.
  • Familiar with databases, payroll systems, and other HRIS technology
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Positive attitude and self-starter that is empathetic and has a desire to serve/support team members.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize several projects and work independently.
  • High level of interpersonal savvy and emotional intelligence.

Travel Requirement: 25% – travel will be required to our Terre Haute office and other remote locations for team member education and engagement with the Family Impact program.

Performing this job requires the use of hands to finer, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, sit, talk and hear (bells, whistles, etc.), stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Employees must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works on-site at the construction work site where the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions and the risk of electrical shock.
